TENNYSON PAINTS

169 Kingdom New Lands

1 September 2021

I remember playing Kingdom: Nothing Lasts a few years ago and enjoying the game. The visuals were pixel-based but still stunning. The core mechinacs were really engaging, though after a while the core gameplay loop became a bit repetitive.

With the expansions more content has been added, and recently I have been trying out Kongdom New Lands. The extra content has made the game more engaging and I have been enjoying it.

Here is a painting of a scene from one my attempts at winning the game.

I tried to capture the pixelated beauty of the original scene, though I wanted to make the water seem a bit more magical, so I kept the colour the same as the sky. Realistically this would not happen, given most of the sky was cloudy and the darker colour of the water in the original screenshot makes more sense. But I still like how my decision turned out.

One thing I can improve on for future paintings is more planning for the composition. After completing the painting I realised I forgot about the reflections in the water. In the original scene, you could see the princess and the stag, as well as the hills in the background reflected on the water. I did like my choice of making the princess and the stag bigger too, giving them more emphasis in the painting. Although perhaps more planning could have resulted in a best of both worlds scenario, where I could retain the beauty of the original composition and give more emphasis on the princess and the stag.
